Ice Villages on Holiday
Every winter ice fishing in Canada is popularized by villages that dot many rivers and lakes. These communities provide camaraderie and safety from an often hostile climate. But what happens to these tiny huts when the season finishes and they need to retreat from melting ice? Johnson’s series entitled Ice Villages on Holiday explores these storage facilities where off-duty huts are repaired and readied for winter. Where land is scarce they are often confined to efficient rows and stock piled. Occasionally, however, villages are laid out, as if on ice, and used as summer campgrounds.
